A Pig In A Fur Coat, Madison, WI

Frankly, I'm surprised I'd waited this long to try this well-regarded restaurant. In the back of my mind, I believe I was saving it for some sort of special occasion or persons that never materialized. Well, that's no way to live. So, on a pretty blustery winter evening, I headed out on foot with this warm space and food in mind. Plus, I'd been reminded of it that week on a PBS show. So, what did I find when I arrived and plunked my tookis down on one of their six bar seats? Let's see…

- Fun, rotating, inventive, seasonal menu, both drinks & eats
- Competent & knowledgeable staff
- Warm guests, the kind that will even chat with a solo fellow diner

On a whim, I went with a fall theme - squash. I chose the Fall Harvest Salad and a pasta dish they call Agnolini. They were both delicious. Very well-prepared and seasoned. The pasta might have seemed like a "small plate", but if you were having apps, salad, pasta and main (or sharing all these in a group) it would be the perfect size. I also barely had enough room for salad and pasta + dessert. It took me a while to get all the dessert down... more on that later.

Yeah - those are pomegranate seeds on the pasta!!! Once I had my pasta, I wanted something bready to eat with it, maybe soak up some of the extra sauce too. They had a "milk bread" option on their menu - that will have to do. It was easily one of the nicest "bread basket" offerings I've had in some time, served warm with fresh butter.

Now, back to dessert. I don't know about you, but my mind often turns to chocolate for dessert, but that also means I had to forego an excellent sounding fall dessert - a crumb cake with Granny Smith and Jonagold apple compote (I can only presume cinnamon was also used). None-the-less, I went with their "budino", which I would call a small chocolate pudding or custard. Perhaps another accurate description would be a slightly thicker chocolate mousse. It was very very good. And those are pears and hazelnuts on top.

See that creamy chocolate goodness?!?!

I would be very happy to go back to A Pig In A Fur Coat any chance I get. If you're in the 'hood and have the time, definitely dine here.

Martina, Minneapolis (Linden Hills), MN

This might be my first restaurant post where I have no pictures of the food, only the drinks. Its certainly not b/c the food was not good - in fact, it was excellent. I think it's simply that the drinks got going quickly (first meal of the day) and by the time the food arrived, I tore into it.

Here's there brunch menu, in case you want to gaze...

At brunch, drinks are the only way to begin, right? Well, we wasted no time... speaking of wasted... this was the friends selection, then my 2nd drink, a pretty spicy Bloody Mary (beer was first drink)...

What was also great about Martina, besides the drinks and food, maybe even more-so than them, was th space. It's just really well done for decor and it makes being there that much more enjoyable. If you don't believe me, take a look below, and then go for yourself.

Lovely dining area...

Glorious kitchen...

Oooh, firewood! (but that also means they have some wood-roasted options on the menu!)

Even the patio is on-point...

I would be back in a NY minute.

Madeline Island Pt. IV - Tom's Burned Down Cafe, La Pointe, WI

This place was all light up on my first night, even with the 'Vid, I had to check it out. Turns out to be pretty eclectic, and really just a place to gather and drink some beers or other options. But, it was kind of cool, and in keeping with their overall island vibe...

Jessica Vosk @ The Cabaret, Indianapolis, IN

Confession - I didn't know who Jessica Vosk is when I decided to attend her event at Indianapolis' The Cabaret. I will say, I reviewed her info from the Cabaret's website sometime this winter and marked her on my calendar as someone I thought I would like - cool story, relatively young, and potentially full of energy. I didn't know her whole life story, never heard her sing, never heard her sing in shows she's know for, didn't know her famous roles, didn't know she used to work on Wall Street and didn't know she started this career later than most. It turns out, sometimes you just go with your gut and it works out amazingly.

I've heard comments since the show and believe I know quality performances when I see them - Jessica Vosk's performance was above par, super high-quality, and something I will not soon forget, especially since you can download her "cabaret set" on Apple Music (just search her name).

Rather than go through each little song and change in the show, I will leave it simply with a few thoughts - she's a pro. She started out singing her opening number from the back of the audience, walking up through the crowd, saying "hello" to some lucky folks, then let a young girl in the audience sing a line of the song - this young girl knocked it out too, and the crowd went nuts. The show was kind of like that the whole time. Standard cabaret fare with such a fresh spin, and an inclusion of others and her own stories, that it is special. Jessica is very very accomplished as a singer of this genre, as is her support crew (I mean, they literally all are professionals).

The Cabaret was also new to me and I could not have been more impressed with how fancy it all is, yet approachable at the same time. Anyone can come and enjoy the show. Really nice space inside, excellent service & cocktails (didn't try any eats there yet), great staff, even an amazing meet & greet after for a select group of donors and fans.

And no, they asked us not to be on our phones taking videos or pics during the performance, so I acquiesced. I don't have any images of her or her crew from the performance. Might be my only regret.

At the end of the evening, we went into their small gallery space for the meet & greet and I was thrilled again by many large works of art known as "paper cuts". These are really large format, esp for paper. Maybe 5-8' in height and so delicate, so intricate, we cringed any time someone walked near them or brushed up against them. Beautiful stuff to cap off the night...

(for some reference on size, that's the counter of a bar behind this work)

Now, Jessica was so busy with people pressing up to see her at the meet & greet that we didn't actually get to talk to her or take a pic, but it's ok. She'd given us so much of herself already that night, that we were fine letting her end her night and head back to the hotel.

If you can't tell, I will hope to be back to the Indy Cabaret any chance I get. It promises to be a great night with fun friends. Does it have to be Jessica Vosk? Mmmm, not really, but that sure would be fine with me.

Freddy Jones Band @ Hey Nonny, Arlington Heights, IL

A quick but awesome night in Arlington Heights. Hey Nonny is a formal concert venue, with food and drink attached next door. This area of AH is right near the Metra line and almost all new construction. They have condos, restaurants, and venues like this in a couple block radius. They're all grown up!

These guys were the reason to attend, and it was a very small venue, not packed in like sardines, but also very good sound and an excellent show. Loved it, will be back.

Ella’s at the Airport, Watsonville, CA

Who knew there was a pretty happening restaurant & lounge right next to the municipal airport. You actually walk into part of the airport building to get the the place. When I walked it in was alive with people and live music too.

Busy bar top, but I sat down and made my way through my dinner. Grab an 805 from the bar and then time to peruse the menu and see what I wanted. They have a full list of salads, pastas, and even wood-fired pizzas, but I wasn't feeling any of that this visit.

So the pages above are not the whole menu, but does show the pages I chose from for my meal - a burger and a dessert. I went with the fresh green salad on the side and "Chocolate Love" for dessert. Burger was very good, no complaints here.

The torte came out of the kitchen looking like it got into a brawl back there, but my mouth sure didn't care what it looked like. It is delicious.

Now that I know where this place is, I'll be back. These folks also have a location in the downtown area, that I would presume is as good as this one.

Ranch Milk Mexican Grill & Craft Beer House, Watsonville, CA

I don't know how I feel about this place, but here's some viewpoints.

Positives:
- For starters, at about 5:30PM on a Sunday, it was not busy at all. I got in just before the dinner rush and I was eating shortly after. They definitely had a good to-go crowd come in too. It was getting busy once I was eating.
- The food and drinks are cheap. No matter how you slice it, the Mexican offerings are all reasonably priced (in comparison to all options in the region) and the beers are very modestly priced too.
- The food and drinks are very good quality and value. I liked everything I put in my mouth and felt it was worth the prices I paid, if not more.
- They have a good number of local and not-so-local beers on tap. Gotta be something for everyone, right? They had all the beers scrolling on a LCD screen, with prices and IBUs. I believe it was two full screens with about 24-30 beers in all.
- They have a patio. Even in Northern CA, sitting outside can be a boon to your night.
- They have ice cream! I mean, if that doesn't seal it.

Not so Positives:
- A restaurant with lots of art, stuffed animal heads, etc on the walls can be perfectly kitsch really easily (like the Wooden Nickel already posted here). The same kind of stuff, not done as well, looks like a hot mess and clutter at best. This place is the latter, IMO. They have stuff all over the walls (lights, posters, artwork, merchadise for sale, etc.), but without much sense to it all. I thought it was just someone trying to use free brewery give-a-ways or literally trying to hide holes or wires in the walls. Even the name seems like they tried to cram everything in it... why not mention the gas pumps too?
- Oddly laid out. Perhaps this is the vibe they're going for, but there's an old "market" and gas station in front of the restaurant as you walk in. I get this is part of their history, but again, it simply feels cluttered for no reason.
- Weird bar. The bar itself is about 5-feet wide, which is ok, but when the bartender can't place a drink in front of you, it might be too wide. There are also two levels to the bar, it steps down slightly nearest the patrons. How about one solid bar top, in a normal width? While you're upgrading the bar area, I'd also love a foot rest down by my feet in front of the bar too.
- The rest of the decor is just as uninspiring. I think some of the old things can be cleaned, updated or upgraded to make this place really good. I don't think it would take much.

Having said all of the above, I'd still go back for it's lowkey vibe, cheap prices and solid service. They all seemed like nice people working there.
